Rural North Dakota

Life is not dull out here in rural North Dakota. We are 6 miles from Enderlin a town of about 600. eastern ND is laid out on a grid so it is easy to get around. The directions to our rental farmhouse go like this. From the junction of County xx and xx, go south 2 miles, turn right on township gravel road, travel one mile, turn left on smaller gravel road and travel 1/2 mile south to the farm. Here the grass is growing up between the tire tracks. The farmhouse and barn are the only dwellings on this road.

We are renting a farmhouse built 100 years ago. It has been updated over the years including a first-floor addition which has a bedroom and bathroom. Thank heaven for the ground floor bedroom as the staircase to the second floor has a sharp bend with no railing. We are without a phone (except for our cell phones), internet access, TV, microwave, and dishwasher. But live is good. We get a cell phone signal standing out in the farmyard. We go to town to the public library for email, and we are reading.

Since our arrival, we have been to morning coffee in Sheldon (Dan's home town), lunch in Enderlin and Lisbon, the Norwegian Day celebration in Kathryn and $1.00 hamburgers in Fort Ransom on Tuesday night.

Tuesday night, Fort Ransom's bar, Thors, offers hamburgers, fries and a drink for a dollar each and the cafe across the street has dollar desserts. We had to park on a side street as the main street (a block long) was full of cars and pickups. There is a drawing for $50 at 8:30 PM in the middle of the street. Everyone hangs out for the drawing. You must be present to win. Last night's pot rolled over for next week.
