It has been too long since we used our GTRV for a camping trip. Dan’s consulting gig ended up lasting until the end of August. So we headed off on a week long Georgia State Park adventure; planning two nights in three parks about 60 miles apart.
We didn’t leave until after noon but figured we would get to the state park in plenty of time for the first come first serve waterfront camp sites at the Georgia Veteran’s State park. Since we live near exit 142 on I-75 and our destination was 9 miles west of exit 101, we didn’t have far to go.
We did get a nice site shaded by tall pine trees overlooking a stretch of Lake Blackshear as it narrowed down to nothing. The park fronts the lake with is a result of the hydroelectric company damming the Flint River in the 1930s. It is warm and more humid today but a nice breeze keeps us cool in the shade. It would have been perfect except for the gnats buzzing around our heads. At least the insect spray did help.
We planned to dine at the Blackshear Lodge and Conference Center in the park that is privately owned. We did not expect to find a very nice upscale restaurant overlooking the wide part of the lake. We were in our camping clothes but so were a few others arriving at 6:30 p.m. We popped for the Sunset dinner with a choice of soup or salad, choice of entree and dessert. I had the sautéed grouper that was one of the best fish dishes I have had. Dam was pleased with his chicken piccata. His key lime pie dessert was so big; he took half of it home making dessert for both of us the next night.
It was not cooling down so we turned on the air conditioning and kept it on most of the night. This park even has free cable TV, which is not very common for state parks.
